Part 1: Selecting a Childbirth Educator in Palm Desert: You’re Giving Birth…is your care team complete?

The first time many women will experience seeing a birth in person is when they go to the hospital or birthing center for their own delivery. Some women feel ready for birth, having a belief their body was made to birth, while others may have trepidation or fear around what will happen to them, both physically and spiritually in the birthing process. Some women will read and watch everything they can about birth, while others do little to prepare themselves and anticipate walking in pregnant and walking out with a newborn. Every birthing person is different and will do what they feel they need to get ready for their birth in their own unique ways.

Most hospitals will offer a childbirth education class for expectant parents to learn about what happens during birth at their hospital (how to know when to come in, where to go when you arrive, what wing you’ll be on, COVID protocols, amenities, etc). There are also various programs that exist to help parents prepare for the birth itself (HypnoBirthing, The Bradley Method, Lamaze, to name a few). These specific programs may focus on breathing patterns in birth, ways to find a calm inner state for the birthing mother and incorporate some information about what the fetus and newborn experiences during and just after birth as well. As a mental health provider, I sometimes am part of a pregnant person’s journey through choosing childbirth education in Palm Desert, and sometimes I hear from women in the postpartum time about the ways their birth was unexpected in particular ways and their thoughts on what they would have liked to do or know. In my training as an infant mental health specialist, I find a lot of value in exploring with parents about what occurs for their infant during labor and birth and their thoughts on what kind of birth they would like to have based on what is occurring for their infant. Based on these explorations, I can feel comfortable recommending a particular birthing program for them to learn more about and see if they feel drawn to it or not. Since the onset of the pandemic, the ability to attend childbirth education classes virtually has dramatically increased and you have your pick of hundreds of options. I recently knew a woman who took her childbirth education class virtually in her native language with the other participants on the other side of the world!

As you begin to conceptualize what life will be like with baby, another question to consider is how you would like to welcome baby into the world? What do you imagine when you see that scene in your mind? Based on what you see, what kind of class would you be interested in learning more about? Although no birth is ever exactly how you might have thought it would be, considering what you’d like and doing what you can to create that birth through your choices of care providers and support team members can prove beneficial and may even be a protective factor for you and your newborn in the postpartum period.
