Sleep Routines

Many of us have created routines in our lives that we follow without questioning the reasoning or benefits of continuing them, and sleep is often a routine that is started in our early lives and allowed to progress unexamined into our adult years. We may not need to look at our sleep routines until we begin to notice we are not feeling quite like ourselves, not rested, feeling foggy, making decisions we told ourselves we were not going to make or noticing more irritability towards those we live with. Sleep is often the first place we can make adjustments that can help us to feel better. One of the biggest changes to affect sleep has been the introduction of the electronics that have followed us from our offices to our bedrooms. Viewing the blue light from an electronic screen can have negative effects on how quickly and easily our body is able to calm down and get into a relaxed state, ready for sleep. Many of us need at least 30-60 minutes away from electronic devices before our nervous system feels regulated enough to enter a sleepy state. What we consume in the hours before bedtime, especially caffeine, nicotine or alcohol can also affect our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. If you notice you are having difficulty with sleep, would it be possible to pay attention for a few days to what your daily and evening routines look like as a way to inquire about places that might be unintentionally negatively affecting your ability to rest?
